New Vanderbilt Initiative to Enhance Safety and Empathy of AI Healthcare Chatbots

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is developing a new evaluation system called the Vanderbilt Chatbot Accuracy and Reliability Evaluation System (V-CARES) to assess the safety and empathy of AI chatbots providing health information, especially on sensitive topics like mental health. The project is led by Susannah Rose, associate professor of Biomedical Informatics, and Zhijun Yin, assistant professor of Biomedical Informatics and Computer Science, and has received up to $7.3 million in funding from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H).

V-CARES will focus on detecting issues like hallucinations, omissions, and misaligned values in AI-generated responses, with the goal of ensuring chatbots are safe and empathetic, especially for mental health topics. The project will combine human expertise with advanced computational techniques, and will engage patients, clinicians, and community members to ensure the evaluation system addresses diverse stakeholder concerns and values. The multidisciplinary research team includes experts in areas like computer science, biomedical informatics, bioethics, psychology, and behavioral economics.

The ultimate goal is to develop AI solutions that effectively serve patients and health systems, and provide the evidence needed to build and deploy chatbots that people can trust and rely on.

Practical Applications of AI Robotics in Social Work

Social Work Practice in the Digital Age

Google AI Scientist Works on Guidelines for Ethical AI Development

In a recent article, Time Magazine reported on the work of a Google DeepMind research scientist on the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI). The scientist is developing a paper that will establish guidelines for how Google should create its AI systems. These guidelines are intended to ensure that AI agents are not excessively human-like and that they disclose their status as AI systems. The paper will also address how AI agents should interact with users and the types of actions they should be authorized to take.

The development of ethical guidelines for AI is a critical endeavor. As AI technology continues to advance, it is essential to consider the potential risks and benefits. By establishing clear guidelines, Google can help to ensure that its AI systems are used in a safe and responsible manner.

Here are some of the key points from the article:

* A Google DeepMind research scientist is working on a paper that will set guidelines for how Google should develop its AI systems.

* These guidelines will help to ensure that AI agents are not too human-like and that they disclose that they are AIs.

* The paper will also address how AI agents should interact with users and what actions they should be able to take.

The development of ethical guidelines for AI is an ongoing process. As AI technology continues to evolve, it will be important to continually update and refine these guidelines. However, the work of Google's research scientist is a significant step forward in ensuring the ethical development and use of AI.
